Commercial Underwriter – Casualty & Construction
Location – Bristol
Salary – Circa £85,000 (Depending on experience)
IPS Group are working with a well-established and highly respected insurer that is looking to appoint a Commercial Underwriter to join its regional underwriting team in Bristol.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced commercial lines underwriter to join a collaborative and supportive business where individuals are empowered to make decisions, contribute to profitable growth, and further develop their underwriting careers.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of a successful Contractors Combined portfolio, underwriting both delegated authority and open market business, while also supporting a broader Casualty and Property account across a diverse range of industries.
The opportunity is a 50/50 split between New Business and renewals dealing with premiums in the range of £15,000 – £60,000 mostly but also some higher premiums.
There is an expectation to be on client visits across the South West so having experience of being out and about with a strong reputation in the market is advantagous.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and existing business in line with underwriting authority and business plan objectives.
- Develop and grow Contractors Combined, Casualty, and Property portfolios profitably.
- Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal standards.
- Manage reinsurance requirements where applicable.
- Build and maintain strong trading relationships with brokers and key stakeholders.
- Monitor portfolio performance and identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
- Support delegated authority arrangements, including audits and oversight activities.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across underwriting, claims, and wider business functions.
- Deliver exceptional service and customer-focused underwriting solutions.
About You:
- Experience underwriting commercial lines business, with a particular focus on Casualty and Contractors Combined risks.
- Strong technical underwriting knowledge and sound market awareness.
- Excellent broker development, relationship-building, and negotiation skills.
- A commercial mindset with the ability to identify profitable business opportunities.
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
- A proactive and adaptable approach to delivering solutions for clients and brokers.
